5th Grade Jumbo Pop Art Paper Mache Sculptures
5th Grade Artists learned about the Pop Art Movement in the 1960's. They learned that it was a time when artists were creating art based on every day objects such as Andy Warhol's Campbell Soup can Prints and Claes Oldenburg's Giant Sculptures of a cherry and a spoon, bowling pins, or a type writer eraser. Students worked in pairs to create Larger Than Life Sculptures of every day art objects. Some chose to create scissors, easels, painting materials, glues, etc. Students used cardboard, newspaper and toilet paper tubes to make the armature or skeleton of their sculpture. They they worked together to use paper mache and news paper to make the smooth outerlayer of their sculptures and painted them to look realistic!
